Martin Drive Neighborhood 's special gardener organized a work/play day which started with building 2 additional beds. We also did lots of weeding and moving of mulch and soil. Looking very good for a garden before Memorial Day.

Kick Off - Martin Drive Summer Projects

Wed. night, May 18th Alderman Hines, David Weber of NIDC, Gail Lione of Harley Davidson Foundation and Sue’s Garden Design pulled out shovels and took part in the “first dig” kick off of the Bookends Landscape Project in the Martin Drive Neighborhood. The project funded by NIDC, MMSD and Harley Davidson Foundation will landscape some unsightly greenways on 36th & McKinley and 46th & Juneau. It will also provide some funding for the expansion of the Martin Drive Community Garden, which is located on 46th, & Vliet Street.

Neighbors also participated in a Police Walk taking the opportunity to visit with neighbors as we passed by. Those who participated were able to meet our new Police Captain, Michael Brunson who took reins of the District just three days ago. The celebration concluded with a pizza party at Foundation Park.

Martin Drive is one of nine neighborhoods participating in the Milwaukee Healthy Neighborhoods initiative, largely funded by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. The approach focuses on a neighborhood’s positive attributes and works to engage neighbors and homeowners to invest in their neighborhoods and position them as good places to live.

Harley Re-Light Event, May 8, 2010

Over 125 Martin Drive families received 12 compact florescent energy efficient light bulbs from Harley Davidson in the past week. These bulbs will generate 75% in energy savings. The energy fair also had fun activities and other give aways. Thank you Harley Davidson.

Adam makes you comfortable and makes you want to spill your story of why and how you came to Martin Drive and why you love it so much. We interviewed business owners, homeowners and renters and learned all the things that make Martin Drive a special to live in … for instance:

Ice Skating Returns to Washington Park

I love it when people stop in and tell me stories about the past. Just the other day someone stopped in with a photo from the early 1900s of the Washington Park lagoon filled with ice skaters. It’s remarkable to see how excited people are when they talk about their memories of skating in Washington Park, and shows how rich this park’s history really is. We are very happy to announce that there will be ice skating again in Washington Park this year! As the word is starting to spread, there are several recurring questions. I thought I could answer for you here. The first most frequently asked question is, “When will the ice be open?” Washington Park’s lagoon is now being treated like those in all the other parks, so once the County Parks staff determine the ice is thick enough, they will announce it on their website: www.countyparks.com.

Will the bathrooms be open?
Our open hours are Tuesday-Friday 4-7pm and Saturdays 9-5pm. The community building is not generally open to the public at other times. So, if you want to join us for a cup of hot chocolate and warm up, come during our open hours!

Are there skates available?
We are happy to include children’s skates in our equipment lending program, thanks to the generosity of Harley Davidson Foundation. In addition, we have several pairs of adult skates that have been donated. The best way to be sure to have the right size is to BYO Skates. If would like to borrow ours, please call in advance to check for sizes. Also, if you have a pair of skates collecting dust in your basement, consider donating them!

If ice skating isn’t your thing, there’s still lots to do in the winter at Washington Park. Stop by any time during open hours to borrow snowshoes, sleds or ice fishing equipment. At our Winterfest on January 30th, you can get a taste for all of these things, as well as try cross country skiing, take a ride on our sleigh, and of course, practice your ice skating. Come inside to warm up with some hot chocolate, then get back outside and play!

Thanks for coming to party together, it was a blast. Thanks to the band, the "Garden People", the committee, the "Bench People", those who donated toys, the "Potluckers", the set-up and break-down crew, the face painters, the chalkers, the talkers, the laid backers, Chef Rick and the partyers, and anyone we missed.

We had lots of food and much fun. The kids enjoyed the party and so did the adults.

Déjà vu Consignments – This shop located right on Vliet Street is filled with interesting secondhand products and gently-used items. Bring your sellable items to Déjà vu Consignments and, if your items are purchased, you will receive a percentage of the profit.

Eat Cake! – A mere glance at the specialty cakes on display in this local shop is sure to make your mouth water! Eat Cake! specializes in creating every type of cake imaginable – from elaborate, elegant cakes to ridiculous, non-traditional masterpieces.

Highland Park and Pies – From the outside, this unique looks like a snug European cottage surrounded by beautiful flower gardens. On the inside, patrons relax with homemade bakery, sandwiches and warm drinks in a cozy setting. Highland Park and Pies is frequented by neighborhood residents who can be found relaxing with friends at one of the patio tables on a pleasant afternoon.

Washington Park – Washington Park is one of three parks in Milwaukee that are part of “The Grand Necklace of Parks” envisioned and designed by the famed landscape architect Fredrick Olmstead at the turn of the 19th century. The former site of the Milwaukee County Zoo, Washington Park is home to an Urban Ecology Center, a public pool, an enormous bandshell, a senior center and a large lagoon teeming with wildlife.

Miller Brewing Company Tour – Nothing beats a free tour of the Miller Brewery, the crown jewel of Brew City. Visitors of all ages are treated to a video, a tour the bottling center, a climb up to the brew house and a stroll through the historic Miller caves before sampling the beverage that made Milwaukee famous. Kids are treated to an alternative beverage – root beer.

Organized Nighttime Trick or Treat – For nearly 15 years, the Martin Drive Neighborhood Association has organized a special event frequented by hundreds of children, teenagers and parents. Each year, a different block from the Martin Drive Neighborhood hosts the event and the entire street is shutdown for this unique and exciting event.

Pizzeria Tazza – Want a good slice of pizza? Look no further that Pizzeria Tazza, a great, locally-owned pizza joint on Vliet Street. The pizza-themed interior, including plush booths shaped like pizza slices, was designed by MATC interior design students. Look for the building with a gigantic coffee cup and saucer perched atop the building.

Urban Ecology Center – Located on the edge of the Washington Park Lagoon, the Urban Ecology Center uses its “outdoor laboratory” to teach members of the community about the environment in an urban atmosphere. The center opened in Washington Park in the fall of 2007 and offers neighborhood environmental education programs to neighbors of all ages.

Vliet Street Commons – a public art project and gathering place designed by Jill Sebastian.

Vliet Street Farmer’s Market – Join neighbors from the Martin Drive Neighborhood every Sunday from 11am to 3pm. Support farmers from the neighborhood by purchasing local produce, products and art.

Washington Park Senior Center – The senior center, managed by Interfaith Older Adult Programs and funded the Milwaukee County Department on Aging, is a terrific resource for adults “50 or better”. The center provides special facilities and programs such as a woodshop, a fitness center, computer classes, yoga lessons and art instruction, all provided for free or a for a nominal fee.

Wednesday Night Concert Series – Milwaukee County Parks sponsors a weekly concert series at the Blatz Temple of Music Bandshell in Washington Park all through the month of July.
Westside Artwalk - A biannual event held in April and September is supportive of the arts and economy by offering exposure of local artists’ works while creating interest and vibrancy of our local businesses. Visit Vliet Street, from 60th to 43rd, the Village, and other Wauwatosa locations. Over 35 locations will feature art, entertainment and special events.

Wick Field – One of the largest outdoor sport centers in Milwaukee County, Wick Field is outfitted with a number of tennis courts, baseball diamonds, football and soccer fields. Wick field is home to a number of intramural sports leagues, from kickball to flag football.

What is Martin Drive Neighborhood Like?

The Martin Drive Neighborhood is a small, safe and affordable neighborhood on the Westside of Milwaukee, fortuitously located between beautiful Washington Park to the North and historic Miller Valley to the South. Due to its tucked away location, the Martin Drive Neighborhood is quiet and surprisingly free of traffic. Its mainly one-way, tree lined streets are often host to joggers, dog walkers and groups of children at play.

The Martin Drive Neighborhood is very accessible and centrally located. Only minutes from downtown Milwaukee, the neighborhood brushes against Wauwatosa to the west and it is a quick hop onto the freeway. Additionally, two large parks, a public pool, the Washington Park Library, cafes, restaurants and a number of unique shops are all within walking distance.

One of the most attractive aspects of the Martin Drive Neighborhood is its diverse and active residents, many of whom are involved in the close-knit neighborhood association. The Martin Drive Neighborhood Association is continually working to increase communication between neighbors, encouraging residents to aid in community projects and always striving to become the best neighborhood we can be!

Night Time Trick or Treat
Friday October 31st
Night Time Trick or treat was another huge success. The 15th Annual trick or treat came off without a hitch. There were about 260 registered kids from about 85 families. There were 22 adult volunteers and 17 teen volunteers. There were about 37 treating homes and mountains of donated candy. Special Thanks to Krista Pena from 44th Street for going door to door to sign up homes. And special mention to Shannon Visnaw who also signed up homes.

Three houses did exceptional jobs of decorating and went all out. I would like to recognize, Kristen Appleget on the corner of 44th & Martin, Janet Froh on 44th Street and Jeff Strohman and Patricia Munford who do an exceptional job of decorating their house on 46th Street every year. You helped make the event very memorable.

Special Martin Drive Block Watch Meeting
There was a special meeting of neighbors with representatives of the Police Department because of several burglaries in our neighborhood. Typically we have very few burglaries so the fact that there were several in the neighborhood in a few weeks caused concern. The police department suggested meeting with us to let us know what they were doing and what we should do to be safe. First, the police department provided extra coverage or sweeps as they called them. We had some foot patrol officers. They suggested making a list of your possessions including serial number, size, etc so that it could be recovered. The suggested listing your items on mythings.com a website designed just for this. The also mentioned that s suspect had been arrested who might be responsible for the burglaries. And, I am happy to report there have not been any additional burglaries so possibly the police have the correct suspect.

One of our neighbors lost their beloved dog named Charlie Brown. This cute fluffy brown little rascal is loved and well-missed by his family.

He is missing from 43rd & Martin Drive since Wed. September 10th. This photo was take when the dog was younger. Now the dog is a bit older and has longer two-toned brown fluffy coat. Charlie has a very unusual color coat. If you have any information that could help return this dog to it's owners, please call 414-933- 6800 or 708-8975. NUWP, Neighborhoods United for Washington Park, announces the 4th annual Washington “Bark” Dog Day event to pay homage to man’s best friend and to raise money for one of Milwaukee’s most beautiful and historic parks. The event will take place in Washington on Sunday, Aug

ust 10th from 11am – 4 p.m. and features entertainer, producer, and writer John McGivern as the Master of Ceremonies. The event will include obedience and other canine demonstrations, lure coursing, pet product vendors, information booths, contests, pet photos, music, food and fun! There will also be a fashion show featuring adoptable "models" from the Wisconsin Humane Society!

Registration cost for dogs is $6.00 each which includes a goodie bag of literature, coupons, and other treats. Families with multiple dogs can enjoy a discounted rate of $5 for each additional dog they bring along. Humans are free! Celebrity judges will determine best costume, best trick, cutest dog and a dog/owner look-alike competition among others. Local businesses will offer information on dog training, breed clubs and the latest in canine products and health services. For an additional fee, dogs can enjoy the thrill of the chase as they zigzag through one of two fully fenced-in lure courses. There are also a variety of “games” for the dogs to play (for a small fee) where they can win fantastic prizes.

The Washington “Bark” Dog Day event is being presented to celebrate the partnership of private and public citizens dedicated to improving and sustaining Washington Park, one of the jewels of the Milwaukee County Park System. The event has raised thousands of dollars to make improvements to the park and has hosted nearly one thousand dogs in its first three years! Call 414.475.9072 for more details.

Hitting the Streets for the Drum Circle

Friday, May 30 we hit the streets to meet kids and neighbors to join our drum making workshop. The Workshop will be held by Cecelio Negrone, Jr. We will have the opportunity to learn to make drums and then start a drum circle.

Sharon Williams and Pat Mueller helped with the recruitment of our kids. About 15 kids participated in the two evening workshop.

Vliet Street Community Green Market is Coming

The market starts this weekend! Stroll over to the market when you hear the drum circle call to the market. There you will find locally grown, now flow, produce, honey, perennials, and handmade treasures galore. This Sunday’s guests include drum circle call to the market and Adekola & Friends jazz performance.

Martin Drive’s Movers – Walk Club
We have been walking each Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. Next Wed. June 4th, we are walking through Washington Park and doing a tree walk, guided by a map published in the Journal in 1981 that identifies 29 different trees, some that are as old as Milwaukee! I hope we will still find them there. Sandy Folaron, director of Mitchell Park Domes will join and enlighten us on the history of this Olmsted designed park. If you are not familiar with the park, you will be surprised by its beauty and respite from the urban environment. Meet at 4303 W. Vliet St at 6:30 pm on Wed.

Drum Circle and Drum Making Workshop
Martin Drive Neighborhood is sponsoring a drum making workshop. You may hear and see neighbors and our Leader Cecilio Negron Jr. drumming and walking in the neighborhood in hopes of enlisting you to join and make your own drum. Cecilio comes from a family of musicians. He is a musician and educator and has worked with Milwaukee Public Theater, performed in many drum and musical groups; leads drum making workshops and drum circles. If you have not experienced a drum circle, I urge you to try. It is a must experience. Cecilio brings much more than music to his workshops. He uses music and performance as a key to unlocking people’s abilities to spread a positive message about change and improvement in our community. Workshops will be held at the Urban Day School on 46th & State Street in the neighborhood. Ummm – Tasty New Laos, Thai & Vietnamese Restaurant on North Ave. – Mekong Café recently opened at 5930 W. North Avenue and I dined there and found the food and service to be great. Very fresh crispy vegetables, excellent seasoning and presentation made this a place I will definitely return to dine in, or carry out. One hint is that it is on the spicy side but they will gladly modify the level of heat to your taste. Phone 257-2228 for carry out.

Summer Public Art Project. – We will be turning three of our planters into neighborhood signs with the help of our friends. Artist Muneer will lead us in a mosaic project to create neighborhood markers. This will be done at the Senior Center in July. Please donate your broken dishes, pottery, and ceramic left over from the bathroom or floor project to this cause. Donations can be delivered to De Javu consignments on 43rd & Vliet Street for use in the project.

Hey New Neighbor! – We have a stack of literature, historic information about the neighborhood and shortbread cookies to be assembled for a packet that can go to your new neighbors. Looking for volunteers to assemble the packets and new neighbors we can deliver to and invite to our monthly meetings.

Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Will Perform at Washington Park on Saturday June 28. Free

More Police, Less Crime – Chief Flynn announced he would create a neighborhood task force, which will add 150-200 officers to the street starting in June. This is a permanent increase, not a summer initiative. The new unit will be housed in the old Station at 47th & Vliet Street, right outside our neighborhood. We will now virtually have two district stations.

Urban Ecology has Summer Camps – The Urban Ecology Center which is know internationally for innovative youth programs will have five weeks of inquiry-based summer day camps run by UEC professional educators for kids K5 through 8th grade in Washington Park. If interested call the UEC at 344-5460. There are scholarships available.

West End Development has Rebate Money Available
Rebates of up to $750 are available for qualified exterior improvements and code violation repair. Contact Tamara Harris at West End Development at 933-2080 for details.

Metal Scavengers
While I am a supporter of recycling, recent thefts of personal property (i.e. copper planter and custom iron window well guards) has prompted me to be concerned about the metal scavengers with stolen shopping carts seen every day in our neighborhood. Washington Heights residents have experienced theft of metal lawn furniture and garden arbors. These scavengers should not be going onto private property. If you see them taking things from the recycling containers, please report them as there is an ordinance regarding this.

79-5.5. Unauthorized Removal of Contents of Waste Containers.
No person shall remove any material from a waste container that has been furnished by the city for the collection of solid waste. This prohibition applies to portable and non-portable containers.
The Third District has assigned Officer Crist who is building a database of these scavengers. Here is what Officer Crist suggests: “The best thing to do is call the non-emergency number (933-4444) as soon as you see one of those individuals in your neighborhood. Make sure to provide an accurate description of the subject, the location and direction last seen. Provide your name and phone number as a contact and request that the squad issue a citation. If the squad has any questions regarding the charges, please refer them to me (Officer Crist). Also, pass the word in the neighborhood that anyone that sees this activity should call the police. Martin Drive’s Annual Meeting Was a Success
Guest speaker Rosheen Strzcinski, lead landscape architect at Zimmerman Design Group, presented easy, expensive ideas for curb appeal. Michael Murphy kept us up to date on Milwaukee issues as they relate to Martin Drive Neighborhood. Cecilio Negrone with the help of neighbors demonstrated his drumming talents. Those who came enjoyed pizza from Pizzeria Tazza and treats from Eat Cake. Door prizes abounded. There was an opportunity to purchase rain barrels and compost bins, Thank you to everyone who helped donating door prizes, setting up or taking down the room, donating food and time to this neighborhood. We have a true small town in the big city of Milwaukee.

Martin Drive’s Annual Meeting
Monday May 12, 6pm
Washington Park Senior Center
Don’t forget! Come to the annual meeting Monday May 12th. We are starting early so we can get out on time. There will be pizza, door prizes, and treats from Eat Cake. Learn about rebates and bring perennial plants to share with neighbors. Alderman Murphy will be attending and the lead landscape designer of Zimmerman design group will talk about easy, inexpensive ways to increase curb appeal.

Martin Drive’s Movers
As birds begin to sing and busy neighbors tend to their yards, the local walking group is getting their tennies out and lacing up their shoes strings! This year’s group is very excited for the walking to begin! The walking starts on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 and will continue every Wednesday. The group will meet outside of Pat Mueller’s home at 4124 W. Martin Drive at 6:30 p.m. and will walk for about one hour.

We have lots of fun events planned during and after our walks, such as a “Stroll Down Memory Lane,” a Historical walk through Washington Park, and “Earning Your Dinner” as we make our way to Pizzeria Tazza for supper. Metal Scavengers
While I am a supporter of recycling, recent thefts of personal property (i.e. copper planter and custom iron window well guards) has prompted me to be concerned about the metal scavengers with stolen shopping carts seen every day in our neighborhood. Washington Heights residents have experienced theft of metal lawn furniture and garden arbors. These scavengers should not be going onto private property. If you see them taking things from the recycling containers, please report them as there is an ordinance regarding this.

79-5.5. Unauthorized Removal of Contents of Waste Containers.
1. No person shall remove any material from a waste container that has been furnished by the city for the collection of solid waste. This prohibition applies to portable and non-portable containers.
The Third District has assigned Officer Crist who is building a database of these scavengers. Here is what Officer Crist suggests:

“The best thing to do is call the non-emergency number (933-4444) as soon as you see one of those individuals in your neighborhood. Make sure to provide an accurate description of the subject, the location and direction last seen. Provide your name and phone number as a contact and request that the squad issue a citation. If the squad has any questions regarding the charges, please refer them to me. Also, pass the word in the neighborhood that anyone that sees this activity should call the police. Vliet Street Community Green Market Starts June 1.
We would like to invite you to the new farmers market, every Sunday, beginning June 1 and running thru September 28 from 11am to 3pm in front of the Washington Park Senior Center at 4420 W. Vliet Street.

Farmers offering locally grown, not flown, produce will be amid other vendors offering an array of things like perennial plants, jewelry, arts, crafts, honey, and handmade soaps to name a few. Some vendors will be there the whole season and other vendors will change weekly. Therefore, it will always be different.

We hope to make this a cultural event and will start the market with a drum circle. Weekly entertainment and demonstrations include spoken word, African Dancers, Peter Mulvey, cooking demonstrations by Outpost Natural Foods and Eden Market. So please come and spread the word. Buy local. Buy handmade and support your community.

The market is brought to Vliet Street by collaboration between Neighborhoods Untied for Washington Park, Washington Park Senior Center, Hmong American Friendship Center, Making Connections, 88.Nine Radio Milwaukee, Outpost Natural Foods, Heritage West Properties, DeMattia Medical Group, Mike Howden and Meritage. Regular walking offers health and fitness benefits. Would anyone consider heading up a walking club? This might be a regular weekly scheduled walking group, which might include a walk with the police department and Alderman on a monthly basis? Any one up for this?

The March 8th clinic at Washington Park was filled with information to make Martin Drive Urban Life safer. It was a very informative agenda. Appearances were made by Mayor Tom Barrett, Alderman Michael Murphy and Captain Harpole and other enlightening speakers.

Shooting in Martin Drive Neighborhood?
If you noticed 45th Street closed and police cars blocking the way on Monday, the 24th, you may have heard that there was a shooting in the neighborhood. After follow up with the police department, it appears that there was not a shooting in the neighborhood. It seems that a person who lived in Waukesha was shot at some other location and dropped here. Let this serve as a reminder to all to be careful, be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activities to the police.
911 calls are reserved for emergencies.

Martin Drive Clean Sweep – Green Sweep, Curb Appeal Contest
Details are still being finalized, still I want to announce the contest, which will focus on three blocks in the neighborhood and is designed to enhance the curb appeal and overall appearance of those blocks and our neighborhood. There will be funds available to rebate about 15 landscape projects, 6 porch renovations and help painting three porches. Your sweat equity, upkeep and maintenance will be matched with rebates and volunteers to make your curb appeal dreams come true. Reminder to Return Garbage Containers to Your Property
City ordinances require each property owner to return the garbage and recycling carts to their yard within 24 hours of pick up. In addition, doing so makes the neighborhood look so much nicer. It’s been a rough winter and we have been patient with those who have not followed the ordinance. Please get back in the habit of returning the carts to your back yard. We all thank you for making the neighborhood look better.

Mandi Awards -- Martin Drive Joins the Winners Circle
On March 13th, Local Initiatives Support Corp. announced the winners of the annual Milwaukee Awards for Neighborhood Development Innovation (MANDIs). The awards honor non-profit community groups and their partners involved in revitalizing Milwaukee neighborhoods. As part of the Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative and through our grant from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, we were selected winners of the Vision Award. This is a HUGE award and a HUGE honor.
Vision Award: Greater Milwaukee Foundation, for the Healthy Neighborhood Initiative, which is a collaboration to focus efforts on providing neighborhoods with the tools they need to stabilize their housing markets and engage residents in the implementation of effective self-management strategies.

Earth Day at Washington Park
On Earth Day, Saturday, April 19th, the restoration and cleaning of the Washington Park lagoon will begin. By Earth Day, an area of the lagoon shore will be excavated preparing it for volunteers to lay coconut logs. These logs will be covered with dirt and then planted so as to look natural and will stop erosion of the shoreline. Volunteers are needed to do a general park clean up. We are looking for volunteers from the neighborhood to help and organize and round up kids and adults from the neighborhood to be part of the project.

There is a new farmers market coming to town! The Vliet Street Community Marketwill open and operate weekly on Sundays from 11am – 2pm beginning June 1st for 18 weeks, and run thru September 28. It will be located in front of the Washington Park Senior Center, visible from Vliet Street.
An exciting collaboration between Milwaukee County Parks, Washington Park Senior Center, Hmong American Friendship Association and Radio Milwaukee 88.9, several neighborhood groups, local farmers and artists, will bring a true neighborhood market to Vliet Street offering locally grown close to home produce, handmade crafts, demos, and live music.

There will be a $200 seasonal fee for assigned 10’ x 10’ space at the market and a $15 weekly fee for vendors who want to participate at random. This money will be invested back into the market in the form of marketing materials, signs and a small fee for a market manager. We have started a search for a Market Manager and several people in this neighborhood have come forward. Radio Milwaukee has promised some live music. If you know of any vendors or people who might be willing to donate some performances or entertainment, please contact me. Pat 933-5589

CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY OFFERS UNIQUE LOOK AT MPD
The Milwaukee Police Department is now accepting applications for its next Citizen Police Academy Class that begins Wednesday, March 19, 2008. Applications are available at the Police Academy, 6680 N. Teutonia Avenue.

The 10-week program designed to provide citizens with working knowledge of the Milwaukee Police Department. It consists of a series of classes held once a week for three hours. Instruction includes classroom academics and practical applications in law, police procedures, and defense and arrest tactics, firearms training and state-of-the-art technology used to combat crime.

Citizen Academy Facts:
Classes will be held every Wednesday, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Class begins March 19, 2008 and ends May 28, 2008
The Academy is a 10-week program consisting of 30 hours of instruction, practical applications and demonstrations Most classes will be held at the Milwaukee Police Academy, 6680 N. Teutonia Avenue, however, tours and demonstrations are scheduled at other department facilities. Participants will be driven from the Academy to these locations by the Milwaukee Police Department motor coach during class hours Class limited to 30 participants for optimum interaction among instructors and participants. Participants must attend 80 percent of the course to graduate. Curriculum builds upon itself. Each class is critical to understanding the function of the Police Department. Participants missing more than two classes will be dropped from the Academy Citizens accepted to the Academy are required to provide photo identification and sign a release Attendees are required to wear a uniform polo shirt during all Academy activities. The cost of the shirt is $20 and it remains the property of the participant. All other material and supplies will be provided by the Milwaukee Police Department. Participants will be allowed to ride with officers on patrol and/or walk a beat with neighborhood foot patrol officers Participants will receive instruction concerning the training given to police officers in Self Defense and Arrest Tactics, Emergency Vehicle Operation and Pursuits and Firearms. Citizens will not discharge a firearm or operate a department vehicle as part of training.

Keep Your Doors Locked
This message refers to incidents that are happening in the Washington Heights Neighborhood just to our west but it includes good advice for everyone. Please keep your doors locked.

Message from Officer Kupsick:
We are now more than reasonably sure that the suspect in these burglaries (in Washington Heights) is a black male teen (14-17) going around asking to snow shovel. A suspect matching this description was recently seen trying the front and back doors of a home that did not answer his knocks.”This suspect is a black male teen 14-16 years of age, last seen wearing a hoodie blue or black in color, slim build, about 5'06 in height and 125lbs in weight. Also as a reminder, this suspect appears to prefer homes left unlocked so PLEASE make sure to lock all doors every time you leave”. Staying locked up while at home is also very good advice. Keep Your Doors Locked
This message refers to incidents that are happening in the Washington Heights Neighborhood just to our west but it includes good advice for everyone. Please keep your doors locked.

Message from Officer Kupsick:
We are now more than reasonably sure that the suspect in these burglaries (in Washington Heights) is a black male teen (14-17) going around asking to snow shovel. A suspect matching this description was recently seen trying the front and back doors of a home that did not answer his knocks.”This suspect is a black male teen 14-16 years of age, last seen wearing a hoodie blue or black in color, slim build, about 5'06 in height and 125lbs in weight. Also as a reminder, this suspect appears to prefer homes left unlocked so PLEASE make sure to lock all doors every time you leave”. Staying locked up while at home is also very good advice. Are you wondering about how the Martin Drive Grant is progressing and what will be happening this spring and summer in Martin Drive Neighborhood? Hang In There – It is bound to stop snowing!
The Third District called block captains and asked us to be aware of our elderly neighbors who may need assistance with snow shoveling. Today’s snow is very heavy and wet. So, if you are able help your neighbors. Be considerate of where you place your snow, so it does not end up being plowed into your neighbors space.

Earth Day at Washington Park
On Earth Day, Saturday, April 19th, the restoration and cleaning of the Washington Park lagoon will begin. By Earth Day, an area of the lagoon shore will be excavated preparing it for volunteers to lay coconut logs. These logs will be covered with dirt and then planted so as to look natural and will stop erosion of the shoreline. Volunteers are needed to do a general park clean up. We are looking for volunteers from the neighborhood to help and organize and round up kids and adults from the neighborhood to be part of the project.

Compost Bins and Rain Barrels
Recycling kitchen and yard waste in a compost bin creates a rich amendment that improves your soil, builds organic matter and saves landfill space and reduces methane emission.

A rain barrel collects and stores rainwater from your rooftop, which can later be used to water your lawn or garden or wash your car. This keeps excess water out of our sewer systems. Rainwater is far better for plants than chlorinated tap water.

Wonderful, sturdy and reasonably priced rain barrels and compost bins are available through Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful. Compost bins cost $45 and includes The Composting Cookbook, a $6.95 value. Similar compost bins retail at $90 and up. 55-Gallon rain barrels cost $50 each and are mosquito-proof and child safe and are built to last.

In addition, at our Annual Meeting, Monday May 12th we are going green. If you are having any financial troubles because of the rise in interest rates, seek help early. Call your lender and explain the situation. Call a reputable housing counseling agency within the city and they can help work with your lender. The City of Milwaukee suggests the Homeownership Preservation Foundation Hotline: 1-888-995-HOPE. They provide free counseling 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in English or Spanish. Also suggested as help working with lenders or to report unfair practices is the STOPP Hotline (Strategies To Overcome Predatory Practices): 414-278-9190. It is very important to act early, as more solutions will be available.

Thank you to the individuals who put up the festive holiday bows on every street in our neighborhood. Some of you performed this task in the bitter cold. We did appreciate it and it sets our neighborhood apart. Thanks also to the carolers who were met with surprise as they spread holiday cheer thru our neighborhood, especially Katie H who organized and Jerry W. who held the tune and light the way with his lantern. It was a fun event.

Washington Park Urban Ecology Center Wish List
Volunteers are invited to help act as extra ears and eyes after school at the center when kids are hanging loose. If you have some extra afternoon time, call Joey at 344-5460 to help. The center is looking for donations of bird feeders, bird seed, clipboards, crayons and markers, a dehumidifier, film canisters, fishing nets and poles, flat bed sheets, kites, kids books, lined paper notebooks, a love seat, microscopes, musical instruments, pens and pencils, storage bins, sleds, snowshoes and stopwatches.

Winter Garbage Removal
There will be no garbage pick-up on New Years Day, Jan. 1 or Dr. Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 15. During the winter months, we are not required to take our carts to the curb. We are required to return the carts from the sidewalk within 24 hours. There are fines for non-compliance.

The city does assist elderly and disabled persons to have sanitation crews pull garbage carts to the curb. For information on these services, call the DPW Call Center, 286-8282.

Holiday Tree Disposal
Trees can be placed on the curb and will be collected by the City of Milwaukee crews. As a greener alternative, trees can also be taken to the Self-Help Centers at 3879 W. Lincoln or 6660 N. Industrial Road. Trees dropped at those locations will be ground into mulch or composted for use by city forestry crews.

Thank you to Katie H. for the wonderful idea to take our December meeting on the road. We had a fun time and felt the appreciation of several of our neighbors. If you thought you were hearing angels last night, you were wrong; it was just a group of neighbors who wanted to spread holiday cheer and we managed to wish many a Merry Christmas. We also want to thank the Washington family who hosted the warm-up at their home after the caroling. We will plan on an even larger group for next year.

I have become aware of a friend/neighbor in need of shoveler(s). A young person left a note stating his desire to start up a small business. Included was a telephone number but we tossed it away thinking we would not need it. If this person is connected to anyone on our list, please email me so that I can connect you to our friend. Today was the third measurable snow of the season. So I was up early and out the door trying to free the sidewalks and driveways of snow. That had me out and about to several locations and I was able to view the bows dressed with soft snow and more roofs being replaced. I captured this photo of men diligently working on a quality tear off and reroofing in the snow. Bless their hearts for such dedication. And now that it is started, they can't turn back.

There were two other roof replacements I did not get photos of. One was in the 1200 block of n. 44th Street and the other in the 1000 block of N. 46th Street.

Thank you for the reinvestment in the Martin Drive Neighborhood.

The holiday season is a time when busy people become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. We can never be too careful, too prepared or too aware. Please share this information with family, friends and neighbors.

Remember the three A’s of crime prevention
Be Aware of your surroundings
Be Alert to suspicious people and vehicles
Avoid dangerous situation
Home Safety
Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even if you will only be gone for a minute.
Don't put large displays of holiday gifts in view of your windows or doors.
When going on trips or out for evenings, use automatic timers to turn indoor lights on and off to make it appear you are home.
Immediately after the holidays, engrave new gifts with an easily traced identification number (Operation I.D.) or your Wisconsin Driver's License.
Don't advertise what you got for Christmas by putting the boxes out on trash day. Break the boxes down or take them to the dump yourself.
Driving
Each December we turn our attention to the problem of drunk driving by observing National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month. Though the holidays bring joy in celebrations with family and friends, they also bring a tragic increase in the incidence of impaired driving. Avoid driving while they are under the influence of alcohol or drug.
Avoid driving alone or at night.
Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your car. Set your alarm or use an anti-theft device.
If you must shop at night, park in a well-lighted area.
Avoid parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells, or cars with tinted windows.
Park as close as you can to your destination and take notice of where you parked.
Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or with children inside.
Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. This creates a temptation for thieves. If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight.
Be sure to locate your keys prior to going to your car.
Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and parcels. Do not put them down or on top of the car in order to open the door.
When approaching and leaving your vehicle be aware of your surroundings.
Do not approach your car alone if there are suspicious people in the area.
Ask mall or store security for an escort before leaving your shopping location.
Automated Teller Machine (ATM)
If you must use an ATM, choose one that is located inside a police station, mall, or well-lighted location.
Withdraw only the amount of cash you need.
Protect your PIN by shielding the ATM keypad from anyone who is standing near you.
Do not throw your ATM receipt away at the ATM location.
Shopping Safety
Lock packages in the trunk.
Don't overload yourself with packages.
If you must shop in the evening, shop with a friend.
Park in well-lighted areas, as close as possible to store entrances. Be particularly aware of persons in the parking lot, especially near your car.
Lock your car and make sure the windows are closed.
Carry only the charge cards you will need. Don't carry or flash large sums of cash.
Carry your purse next to your body with the purse flap against you. Men should carry their wallets in front or inside pockets.
Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. Don't allow your attention to become distracted from your purse or packages.
Children
If possible, leave small children at home with a trusted babysitter.
Teach your child to go to a store clerk and ask for help in case your child is separated from you.
Teach children to stay close to you at all times while shopping.
Never allow children to make unaccompanied trips to the restroom.
Children should never be allowed to go to the car alone and they should never be left alone in the car.
Teach children their full name, address and telephone number to give to police officers or mall security.
Teach children to immediately inform you if a stranger is bothering them.
Teach children to go to a store clerk or security guard and ask for help if you become separated in a store or shopping mall.
Don't hesitate to notify store security if you see suspicious activity.
If you have to wait for a ride, wait in a busy, well-lighted place.
If you are a victim of a crime, report it to police immediately.
Together we can reduce crime and enhance the quality of life in our community.

Big Red Holiday Bows

The Tradition of the Red Holiday Bows
Many years ago, at a monthly meeting, a former neighbor, Beth Milhans, came up with the idea to place big red bows on the trees. We began installing the bows, the week after Thanksgiving and take them down right around the first January. The tradition greets fellow neighbors, corporate neighbors and those who pass thru and shows unity of the neighborhood.

The installations started going up last weekend and each day there is another street lined with bows to surprise and greet those passing on the streets of the Martin Drive Neighborhood.

Thank you to all the neighbors who climb ladders in the cold armed with staple guns and bows to post the festive holiday bows.

November Neighborhood Meeting Held at Senior Center

November Meeting Well Attended with Many Guests & Much Information Shared

November 12th was the first quarterly meeting to be held at the Washington Park Senior Center. The additional space offered room for more neighbors to attend and attendance of about 40+ was good for our first meeting. The Steering Committee noted a few changes for the room set up to make it more comfortable for future meetings.

We had a number of important guests at the meeting including Alderman Michael Murphy, Chairman of the MPS School Board, Peter Blewett and Chairman of the County Board and our Supervisor, Lee Hollaway. Budget issues and reasoning behind certain decisions were discussed by all three guests. A complete review of the meeting can be read in the Minutes which are found on our website, www.martindrive.org.

Another highlight of the meeting included an opportunity for everyone to pick up the 110 Halloween photos that had been printed and framed and donated by a generous neighbor who wants to remain anonomous.

Maggie Blaha, the Martin Drive Agenda Setter always ends the meeting with the question, “What is the best part of living in the MDN?” Responses included, quality neighbors, near great park. One neighbor said he liked that it was a neighborhood where people really came together and watched out for the neighborhood.

Keep Up the Good Work on Your Homes

As you can see, the Martin Drive Neighborhood likes signs. Neighborhood meetings occur monthly on the second Monday of every month. We have met for about 17 years at 1219 N. 43rd Street and at the Senior Center for our May Annual Meeting. Early on, we made signs for each block, and had block watch captains put out the sign to remind everyone to come to our meetings.

And now we are blessed with the ability to hold quarterly meetings at the Washington Park Senior Center. We feel this will increase attendance and offer more fresh and new faces to the mix. We had heard from some neighbors that they felt uncomfortable coming to someone’s home for fear that they would be the only new person. (And let me put that notion to rest. As long as we have been doing this, everyone is welcome, and there are always warm, fresh home-made cookies. )

Since the November meeting was our first at the Senior Center, I was careful to make sure every block had a sign. So on Sunday, I set out putting up signs and was very surprised by the number of houses which had started major exterior renovations. I captured two new roof projects, one on 42nd Street and one on Martin Drive. Another house on 44th Street is being sided and the porch is about to be restored. I also noted another major porch renovation on 46th Street. Thank you to the neighbors who are putting investment back into this neighborhood. I'll be back to take some "after" photos to show.

Best Antique Store in Milwaukee Resides in Martin Drive Neighborhood

Deja Vu Consignments recently won the WISN-12 #1 best store in the category of Shopping/Antiques. This is a huge honor and to celebrate, on Friday, Nov. 9th owner, Karen Spencer held an A-List Party to thank her loyal customers. A bit of bubbly and fabulous appetizers were enjoyed by all who came.

When asked, what does it take to be number one? Karen replied, “Good customer service and loyal customers”. While all those ingredients are true about Déjà vu, there is much more that goes into Deja Vu taking the number one place amongst Antique Stores. Déjà Vu has a friendly, warm atmosphere. You will feel very comfortable browsing and will enjoy the fresh and neat appearance of the store that constantly changes. Every 30 days the items are reduced by 10% and this reduction is clearly marked on the price tags.

Purchasing from Déjà vu is a very green thing to do. Karen has a special eye and talent for turning hopeless appearing items with good bones into useful and appealing furnishings with pizzazz. She can rework a piece or combine several pieces into her creations which she calls “Déjà Vu Originals”. It is fun to look at her before and after photos that are on display in a book in the store.

Déjà vu Consignments just celebrated seven years in business. She opened her store on Martin Luther King Drive but moved the store to Vliet Street in the Martin Drive Neighborhood in 2004.

Lights Make Good Friends & Neighbors

Saturday, October 27th, Paul Tracy, Al Siemsen, Naimi Adedalpo, Gwendolyn Spears and teen volunteers, Shannon Krueger and Christopher Spears hit 42nd Street and McKinley Boulevard. We rang bells, talked to neighbors and replaced more porch lights with energy efficient bulbs. We also noted a number of light fixtures that were in need of replacement and put them on the list.

As the daylight shortens and the darkness lengthens it is important to remember to keep those porch lights on. We found neighbors were thankful to receive our energy efficient bulbs and help.

The next day, Dan Larsen, Vicki Provencher and Pat Mueller made the rounds on 43rd Street talking to neighbors and installing lights. We met several new neighbors and caught up with others and gathered more e-mail addresses for our e-mail bulletins.

The best part was coming back in the evening and seeing the porch lighs lit.

A Howling Good Time For All!
The night was flawless, except for a few over generous people who ran out of candy early because they gave out handfuls! The setting for the 2007 Spooktacular was 44th Street from Martin Drive to Vliet Street. The weather was perfect. Earlier in the week 44th Street looked like any other street but Friday afternoon before the event, neighbors came together and decorated for an awesome event.

Thanks to the generosity of our many friends and neighbors, the annual Night Time Tick-Or-Treating event was another huge success! We would like to thank everyone in the Martin Drive Neighborhood who helped make our Halloween celebration fun and safe for the children who participated.

Thanks to the 38 families who were our Treating Homes. You have our most sincere thanks. And very special thanks to Naima Adedapo, Jennifer Visnaw and her daughter, Shannon Visnaw who went door to door convincing neighbors to be treating homes. We could not have done this without you.

Thank you, also, to all the families who donated candy for the Treating Homes. My office was over run by a mountain of candy and we were able to supplement the candy of the Treating Homes, provide candy to our volunteer porches and give candy to the teen volunteers.

Seventeen teens volunteered that evening handing out candy at houses that requested volunteers and gathering up the luminary buckets for safe return. They all arrived on time and were a great help to the event.

This year something new was added to the already Spooktacular event. Because of an extremely generous contribution of time, talent and money, a backdrop was set up to take free photos of the kids. Precious memories were captured in photos which will be made available framed and free of charge at our November monthly meeting. Halloween frames have been ordered to complete the very professional portraits.

Christina Head of Fox Six News covered the event. Martin Drive made it to the 9 & 10 pm news for a neighborhood Halloween event that was safe and well attended.

Thanks to Pat Mueller keeping up with the paperwork, use of her office for registrations and to house many pounds of Halloween candy, and materials needed for the event.

The Halloween Committee enjoyed meeting many new neighbors and catching up with those neighbors we already know. This event makes our neighborhood truly special and connects and bonds so many people. We enjoyed the comments from neighbors and participants about how nice the event was and we were grateful to see how many children and adults said “thank you” for the fun and memorable evening. We have enjoyed working with our neighbors and look forward to bigger and better Halloween celebrations each year.

In the News!

On October 22, 2007, Pat Mueller was interviewed by Channel 6 News, about the Martin Drive Neighborhoods’ long standing and active block watch and neighborhood organization. A brief clip of our Steering Committee in action was televised depicting an example of an active resident neighborhood group working on neighborhood issues.

Martin Drive Neighborhood association members strongly believe in community policing, and generally getting to know your neighbors and supporting them by watching out for them and reporting crime and suspicious activities. We believe in creating an environment that is safe and not conducive to crime. This can be done in many ways including, keeping up with the maintenance of our homes giving the appearance that the neighborhood is cared for, keeping shrubs trimmed low so they do not block view and offer a place for intruders to hide
keeping porch lights on, participating in neighborhood walks and many more.

Because of this active neighborhood, we be happy that we have a low crime rate and are not experiencing some of the serious crime issues of other neighborhoods. And we are happy to be in the news in a positive light!

The Light Brigade Strikes its First Hit

The Light Brigade Starts

On 44th Street

Last week we handed out flyers announcing the Light Brigade was coming to 44th Street on Saturday October 20, 2007 between 1 and 3 pm. Prior to arrival our arrival, signs were posted announcing the Light Brigade was coming.

44th Street Residents Linda and Pat Devitt led the charge and were accompanied by Pat Mueller and Naimi Adedapo. They visited each home on 44th Street from Martin Drive to Juneau armed with a ladder and a supply of energy efficient light bulbs encouraging everyone to Light the Night.

We rang door bells and talked to everyone we could about the importance of keeping porch lights on in the evening. Not only does it make the appearance of the neighborhood friendlier to all passing through, but lighting is a well know crime prevention technique.

Neighbors were thankful for the energy efficient bulbs, the lending hand we provided by actually installing the bulbs in porch fixtures and lampposts and for the $2 coupons we handed out so they could purchase more bulbs.

We installed efficient bulbs that were the equivalent of 60 watts but only used 13 watts of electric, so there will be reason to turn on lights -- energy savings. After it turned dark, I drove down the street and saw the glow of porch lights spilling onto the yards and sidewalks.

An eight year resident of the neighborhood commented that "the neighborhood had dramatically improved since she moved to Martin Drive." Another long term resident commented that "we have a good stable neighborhood and let's keep it that way."

Efforts like the Light Brigade and making an effort to know your neighbors has helped to maintain the quality and safety of Martin Drive Neighborhood.
